The Austintown Fitch High School speech and debate team had 19 students compete in the state tournament March 2-3 with two earning state championships.

They competed against 81 schools with more than 900 student competitors. The team came home with second place overall in cumulative sweeps and fifth overall.

Logan Pasqual and Jarrett Kerpsack took first in Duo Interpretation (state champion), while Albert Jordan won the Oratorical Interpretation state championship. Christian Roberts (sixth place) was a state finalist in Oratorical Interpretation and Josh Pittman (fourth place) was a state semifinalist in the Lincoln Douglass Debate.

Also claiming awards were quarter-finalists Mia Colon and Maia Totterdale (Duo Interpretation), Kayla Sabo, Cassie Wirtz, and Robyn Minkewicz (Impromptu) and Jensen Hykes (Prose Poetry), all placing in the top 24 in the state.

Duo teams Pasqual and Kerpsack and Colon and Totterdale, and Lincoln Douglass debater Tyjair Sadler will go on to compete in the national speech and debate tournament in Alabama.
