There will be something to crow about next week as the Mahoning County Fair - aka The Canfield Fair - begins on Wednesday and runs through Labor Day (Sept. 3).
If you’re planning to head out to the fair to grab a gyro, attend a concert, ride rides or look at the animals, you may want to know what weather to expect. Well, Meteorologist Eric Hamilton is at your service. OK, so according to weather.com, Wednesday (High 79, sunny) and Thursday (82, partly cloudy) look perfect. Friday and Saturday, on the other hand, are forecast for scattered thunderstorms (60 percent chance) and a high of 81. So pick the day that works best for you and have a great time.
I’m not a big fair fan. I think I mentioned once that I’ve only been to the Canfield Fair once in my life (twice if you count a visit to the Vindicator’s fair booth). I’ve only lived in the Valley since 2001, so it’s not like I’ve been here all my life and jilted the fair for decades.
Don’t get me wrong, fair food is on my top 10 list of favorite food venues. You really can’t go wrong with a stromboli, fair fries or Italian sausage (hold the onions and peppers). When I was younger, I’d go for a funnel cake or elephant ear. Recently, at a festival in Salem, I tried a deep-fried Oreo cookie. It was OK, but I prefer a regular one.
Most years, we take the kids to the Columbiana County Fair since it’s only 10 minutes away. They don’t really care for the food, but like the rides. This year, we didn’t go. The biggest reason is because we will be going somewhere much more exciting in 57 days (But who’s counting?) — Disney World.
It will be our first-ever family vacation. Talk about setting the bar high for future vacations! But, hey, as some of my teenager friends say, YOLO. That stands for You Only Live Once, by the way.
Our 16-hour trek to Orlando should be quite an adventure. We are driving roughly halfway the first day, staying the night, then arriving the next day. Eight hours (or more) in a vehicle with three children will be interesting. So we will be staying in a hotel for a total of eight days. They’ve never even been in a hotel before, so that alone may be fun for them.
So, while I won’t be visiting the Canfield Fair in all its glory, I’ll get my fill of large crowds, amusement park food and entertainment in a few short weeks in Florida.
But if you’re going to Canfield next week, eat a pepperoni roll for me!
